The establishment of the Bachelor of Nutrition Study Program (Prodi) in Indonesia started from the desire of nutrition figures at the national level to establish a study program for basic nutrition science because at that time there were nutritionists with the basis of Medical Science, Faculty of Public Health, and D3 Science of nutrition. The opening of the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program in Indonesia began with the opening of the Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program at UGM which was then followed by other major universities in Indonesia, such as Brawijaya University and Diponegoro University which opened the Nutrition Science study program under the Faculty of Medicine. The Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) later emerged as the First Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program under the Faculty of Public Health (FKM). Gradually, various other Undergraduate Nutrition Programs appeared under FKM, such as at the University of Indonesia (UI), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Esa Unggul University.
The history of the establishment of the Undergraduate Nutrition Study Program started from FKM Unhas which initially consisted of 5 majors, namely Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences (PKIP), Environmental Health, and Health Administration and Policy (AKK). Then there were the addition of two specializations, namely Nutrition Science and Occupational Health and Safety (K3) where Nutrition Science which was integrated with the AKK section became the AKK and Nutrition department. Meanwhile, K3 which is combined with the Department of Environmental Health becomes the Department of Environmental Health and K3. Then in its development, the Department of Nutrition was independent and separated from the AKK section. The lecturers come from various faculties both from FKM and from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Social and Sciences
Political. Furthermore, in 2005, in accordance with the national trend, Nutrition was developed into a Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program which was the first Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program in Eastern Indonesia. Established based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education no. 3127/D/T/2005 dated 22 September 2005. The Nutrition Science Study Program was established to meet the needs of undergraduates and nutrition professionals to address nutritional problems in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia. Graduates of the S1 Nutrition Science Study Program will get a Bachelor of Nutrition (S.Gz) degree. The Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program is under the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Unhas, but in some courses there are additional lecturers from various faculties, such as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the Faculty Social and Political Sciences.
In 2017, the organizational structure at FKM underwent a revision where the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program became under the Department of Nutrition. This is because the study program can be on/off, so the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program at FKM Unhas is under the Department of Nutrition.
At the beginning of the establishment of the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program in 2005, it only accepted students for study assignments because when the decree was issued for the establishment of the Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program, the time for new student admissions had passed. In 2006, began to accept new students graduating from high school. Then, in 2016 along with the implementation of the evidence-based learning (EBL) system, the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program only accepted high school graduates and did not accept student assignments.
The first accreditation obtained by the Nutrition Science study program was accreditation by BAN-PT which received an A accreditation in 2012. Furthermore, the study program obtained accreditation from the Health Higher Education Accreditation Institute or also called LAM-PTKes in 2017 where the Nutrition Science Undergraduate Study Program was accredited A. And in 2020, the Undergraduate Nutrition Science Study Program FKM Unhas has been declared to meet the ASEAN Quality standard
